CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO

ABOUT AN HOUR after we’d demolished the pizza, the doorbell rang.

Darkness had settled on the house around us, so the sound put us all on alert. I shouted out to Zax, who was playing a game on the laptop.

“One sec,” he tapped away at the keyboard, checking the security camera installed by the front door. “Oh. It looks like Enforcer Chief Cipher and Jay. What would the chief be doing here?”

Zax wasn’t the only one surprised. I jumped out of my seat without thinking, my heart racing. Cole was here. Right now. On the other side of the door.

“I’ll go check,” I said, trying to keep my voice neutral. “The chief probably just wants an update.”

Kaleb grabbed another slice. “He’s not having any of the pizza.”

“I’m sure he’ll survive.” I patted him on the shoulder as I moved past him.

Brushing off the vest I was wearing, I quickly pushed my hands through my hair, grateful I hadn’t reached for a slice of garlic bread earlier on.

Opening the door, there was Cole, looking as fantastic as ever. His eyes connected with mine over a box he was holding, and my hands itched to touch him. But I stopped when the reality hit of where we were.

“Hi,” I greeted him carefully, stepping back so he could enter the house. He stayed where he was. “Is everything okay?”

“Everything is fine.” He lifted the box slightly. “The djinn brothers’ things. The prison released them to me. I figured I’d bring them over.”

Jay took the box from him. “I’ll take these in. I smell pizza.”

Soon he was gone, and there was just Cole and me standing awkwardly by the front door.

“How come you brought them over?”

“I decided to come over to see Dan for an update, so I brought them with me. I asked Dan if he wouldn’t mind driving me out to come see you all. He sent Jay as he was busy with something.”

“Oh,” I said, a little disappointed. Not that I’d been expecting anything else. “Okay. Well, come in, and we’ll fill in the gaps that Dan may have missed.”

“Actually, I was hoping to have a word with you in private?”

My brows furrowed with confusion at his odd behavior. “Okay,” looking over my shoulder, I said, “but there’s nowhere private in this house.”

“She’s right about that!” Kaleb shouted back. I jabbed my thumb over my shoulder.

“See what I mean?”

“Ah right. Okay. Outside then?”

“Sure.” I grabbed my jacket from the hook and threw it on, following him outside and closing the door behind me.

Cole headed toward the trees bordering the property, not stopping until he was sure we were out of earshot of everyone in the house.

“What’s up, Cole?”

He turned to face me, looking nervous all of a sudden. “I wanted to tell you we’ve managed to get more people on board to secure the magical ward around Seattle. We can now put them on shifts to maintain it for longer. We doubt it will stop some of the escaped prisoners from crossing, but an alarm will go off if they try.
